Al Qaeda, Pakistan and Kerala

The new Al Qaeda chief Zawahiri is more deadly than his predecessor Osama bin Laden.  Zawahiri was bin Laden’s intellectual mentor.  An article in the latest issue of Frontline [July 15, 2011] says that Zawahiri was the brain behind the 9/11 attacks.  “All the tapes recorded by him since 2001 urge Muslims to strike at the commercial interests of the West and its allies… In recent years, Kashmir, too, has frequently figured in his speeches,” says the article.

Is the Al Qaeda gaining grounds in Kerala?  The prominent Malayalam newspaper, Malayala Manorama, has been reporting recently that Pakistani and Maldivian citizens are buying up land in Kerala.  Today’s [8 July] Manorama, for example, reports that a Pakistani citizen named Ansari was found to be the owner of a house and ten cents of land in Kovalam, a famous beach in Kerala.  Ansari’s house faces the Taj Hotel and is worth Rs10 million.  Two days ago Manorama reported that Maldivian Muslims are buying up land in Kerala and the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI’s link is evident in the land deals.

One of the terrorists who accompanied Ajmal Kasab was a Maldivian, according to the Manorama report.  Religious fundamentalism is sharply on the rise in Maldives.  Hence the influx of Maldivians into Kerala cannot be taken lightly, especially since many of them are found to be travelling between Waga border and their bases in Kerala.

The Frontline article mentions that Zawahiri “is known to be in close contact with Ilyas Kashmiri of the Karkal-ul-Jihad al-Islami, which along with the Lashkar-e-Taiba, has been busy targeting Kashmir and was responsible of the terror attacks on Mumbai in November 2008.”  Zawahiri is determined to sow terrorist attacks all over the non-Islamic world.   Is “God’s own land” becoming one of the many bases of the devil’s outfit?

What God owns, will the Devil leave alone?

So, there is a downside to claiming Kerala s God’s Own Country! Ironically, at the peril of one’s own country!

In Kazantzakis’s famous novel Zorba, the Greek, the eponymous protagonist refuses to believe in God for the simple reason that God will bring in the Devil and then there will be too many problems! Yes, Raghuram, what God owns the Devil won’t leave alone.

I had not read Kazantzakis beyond Temptations. I am just not into big time reading! But, I have nothing but the greatest admiration for your breadth of reading and the uncanny abilitiy to tap into what you have read.

    I am lucky.

Raghuram, I highly recommend ZORBA, THE GREEK to you. You will enjoy it. There are just a few such books that remain deeply etched in my heart. I’m able to recall only those so quickly.
